Our Butterflies

Our butterfly artworks were the end result of investigating live butterflies, pictures of butterflies and sharing our own experiences and knowledge. We looked closley at their various body parts and the symetrical patterns on their wings.
Next we made some observational drawings of butterflies and lastly we created our own butterfly.

Fabrics and Fibres

Our science study in Term 2 was called Fabrics and Fibres. In our unit we found out about all the different properties of fabrics. We had a guest speaker called Dil Bellworthy come talk to us about making clothes out of merino. Dil owns a company called Glowing Sky and he told us lots of interesting things about the properties of merino wool. For instance did you know that you can wear merino wool for two or three days and it won't get stinky and need a wash. We did some experiments with fabrics too. One of them was finding the best fabric to clean up a spill from a drink bottle. We had great fun even if there was a bit of cleaning up to do afterwards. We also had to research and find out the best fabric to make a T Shirt, a raincoat, or a pair of P. J's out of. We had to discuss our reasoning with others. We thought this was a fun study to do.

During Term 2 we chose an animal to research and write about. What we ended up writing was an animal report and when you read it you will find out lots of things about the animal. We were allowed to publish our reports how we wanted to. Some of us made colourful posters and some of us made a book. Our reports are on display in our room if you would like to come and read them.

Culture Term 1

Room 2's Korowai

As part of our culture unit we made a korowai. This is a special treasure for the Maori culture. It is a cloak with feathers.

On Wednesday we made our own Korowai. We wove it out of paper. One way we wrote the names of the different cultures we have in New Zealand and our school. The other way we wrote we were all New Zealanders. We wove them together and decorated it with feathers.

We found out that New Zealand is made up of many different cultures coming together to make one whole culture for New Zealand.

The thing that we found interesting was that Lego comes from Denmark. It was invented there. They make lots of different Lego things in Denmark. Do you know they even have a whole town made of Lego? It is called “ Legoland “.
“ The Lego that you play with at home comes all the way from where my Mum comes from ”, said Daniel M
